When in West Hollywood I always make a point to stop by my favorite juice bar Beverly Hills Juice on Beverly Blvd. Living in L.A. you can imagine there are countless juice shops to choose from and especially right by the beach here in Venice, so why is it that Beverly Hills Juice ranks top on my list you might be wondering? The astonishing shop is no larger than my modest sized closet, I can’t believe how much delight comes out of this small space. I find comfort in the fact that there is always the same guy “owner” working every single day with his only companion/ colleague being a blender that he has placed next to the shops front and only window. Ordering couldn’t be easier you simply choose from the bottles that are displayed that day meaning those are the blends in season and then you can simply have the juice for $6.50 or turn it into an energizing shake for $9.50. I always opt for the shake as there is no better shake in town. Being a fan of simplicity and deliciousness this shake is the perfect spokesmodel for the two. As you’ve gathered by now this shop is indeed very low key and minimalistic and truly doesn’t need a thing more since it has the ultimate in fresh, seasonal and simplistic juices and shakes, a winning recipe that sends Venitian beach dwellers like myself into Beverly Hills.
I found myself in the neighborhood yesterday so I of course stopped in. I shared a shake with Alex as we usually do, this time ordering strawberry, apple, coconut with a banana almond base. The shake was of course superb so much so that when I was leaving the neighborhood 5 hours later I wanted another. The only thing that stopped me from heading back in to get seconds was L.A.’s infamously horrendous rush hour traffic…it had me beat. I just couldn’t convince Alex of the shakes worthiness although for a moment he was almost gung-ho!! When he opted to avoid traffic he suggested that we just make a shake at home. Like a bratty kid I of course huffed and puffed that it’s not the same thing and that I only wanted that shake. Not having any luck conjruing up a convincing plea for the shake as I witnessed miles now come between us and the shop my attention started to shift onto an image of the papaya that was in my fridge waiting to be used in a new recipe and just like that I turned to Alex with new found excitement exclaiming “yeah let’s go home and make a shake”!
- 2 cups fresh papaya (skin peeled)
- 1 banana
- 1tsp vanilla bean
- 2 inch nugget ginger (skin peeled)
- 6 large ice cubes
- 2 cups non dairy milk (I used Almond)
- 3 tbsp non dairy yogurt (I used Coconut)
- Peel and cut the papaya and ginger
- Add the liquids to your blender first
- Next add the ice
- Then add the remaining ingredients
- Blend and serve garnished with basil leaf or papaya heart
- I recommend adding basil to this recipe start with a few leaves and adjust to your liking. If you are a fan of raw supplements I recommend adding Sun Warrior to the mix using 1 tbsp.
