This was one juicy weekend from the news revealed to us about the gender of our first baby to the new juice bar and vegan grill opening at Whole Foods Venice. I’m so excited to share it all with you that it’s hard to know where to begin! I guess I should start with Wednesday the day of our first ultrasound.
Wednesday I went into my birthing clinic, Alex excitedly joined! We learned that our baby was growing normally and we even got a print out of baby Nova’s face! We were filled with so much joy after this appointment, things really began to feel very real after seeing our baby moving, and putting a face with his/her name. We asked the Doc to please not reveal the sex, instead he wrote it down and sent us on our way with a sealed envelope. Our dear friend came by to see the photos and we had a job for her. She was to be the one to take the envelope and fill the cupcake liners with stickers that revealed boy or girl. She was honored and began to cry as she tore open the envelope. She made sure we couldn’t see what we were having and stacked each liner with a sticker and then handed the liners over to me.
I baked several test batches of vegan cupcakes trying various recipes on the web and left feeling completely unsatisfied with the high use of oil and vegan margarine. I then pulled out my gluten free baking mix from Pure Pantry and decided to create my own cupcakes from intuition. I impressed myself with the divine moistness that squished between my mouth. Let’s just say I went on a cupcake baking spree and that baking cupcakes while pregnant is pretty much an occupational hazard! ;0
Not only did I make the cupcakes for the reveal but I also made the decorations using everyday kitchen supplies such as cupcake liners and lollipop sticks. Alex and I were so excited to do this baby reveal that we even developed our own game to play with our friends to reveal the sex. Cutting into a cake and seeing pink or blue frosting felt a little to short lived when it came to prolonging the excitement so we decided to have four sticker icons. Two of the four icons revealed the gender and the other two pieces were decoys. Everyone would pick a cupcake and then organize themselves into groups depending on what image was on their stickers. We strategically called out the icons that were fillers first and then proceeded to organize the last two groups. Which ever group had the extra icon (sticker) revealed the sex. Hearts represented girl and the stars represented boy. Everyone organized themselves and we all began to count excitedly and the there was a tie! How could we have a tie? Did somebody lose their sticker? We all spotted an extra cupcake still on the table we immediately searched for it’s sticker which was nowhere to be found all the while Alex is keeping calm and quiet and going with the flow watching everyone in mass confusion, after much fuss Alex speaks up and says I have the extra cupcake right here (such a jokester)! We all laughed at how we missed the obvious and then immediately went straight to figuring out if he had a heart or star?! I lift his cupcake from the wrapper and it revealed that our baby Nova is indeed a… STAR!
We were all so full of joy that tears were shed, laughter and hugs galore, it was one of the most fun and exciting moments ever shared with our friends! We felt as if we were in the biggest love bubble, it was a truly special and remarkable afternoon we’ve been on a happy high ever since! I was also really happy that I was able to bake cupcakes that were praised throughout the celebration. Raw foods have always been my specialty so to actually have a great batch of gluten free and vegan cupcakes was a huge victory for my baking confidence. I’ll be sharing the cupcake recipes with you all as well as the d.i.y. cupcake toppers and gender reveal game.
Now it’s Sunday and the juicy newness continues as I was invited into Whole Foods Venice to sample the juices of their new juice bar and vegan grill! Noting better than loading up on juices after a cupcake party! I was highly impressed with the flavor combinations and that I was able to sample anything I wanted from ginger to mixed juice blends. At the vegan grill I was even allowed to help myself to the hot soup of the day which happened to be black bean (a pregnancy favorite of mine and Nova’s)! While at the juice bar I got to custom order my own blend as well as pick out grab and go juices for the week. I love the convenience of the new juice bar and think the community will benefit greatly from the selection wether looking to give juicing a try for the first time or to get ones daily ginger green fix, there is something for everyone. I also love knowing that I can eat a delicious meal for a great price at the grill. I ordered a tostada with black beans and grilled veggies topped with Daiya cheese and salsa, it was such crunchy and delicious lunch! For $5.99 it’s a great value too, as Alex and I split that with a juice and were completely full. I left Whole Foods today feeling beyond satisfied and nourished from the friendly staff to the clean eats. I’m even enjoying the “cleanse 4” juice as I type it’s a refreshing blend of pineapple, coconut water, filtered water, apple and mint it’s the perfect light juice to wet and refresh ones pallet while satisfying a sweet tooth.
